Xavi rejoices after sealing the win
Barcelona will face Athletic Bilbao in the Copa del Rey final after beating Valencia 2-0 at the Camp Nou. Barcelona were the better team on the night and if they had taken a few more chances, would've killed the game off very early on. Cesc Fàbregas and Xavi Hernandez were both on the score sheet as Barça ensured Pep Guardiola's twelfth final since he arrived on the Barça bench.

Both teams started the game with equal opportunities but neither side could create any real goal scoring chances. Feghouli saw his shot hit the side netting before the deadlock was broken in the 15th minute.

Cesc Fàbregas made a well timed run and was picked out by Lionel Messi from inside his own half. The summer signing looked to have overrun the opportunity but you can never rule out an inform player such as Fàbregas from finding the net. From the acutest angle Fàbregas chipped the ball over the Valencia keeper and put Barça ahead.

This goal jetted Barça into their stride. They began playing with their world famous tiki-taka style and started to dominate Valencia. Young starlet Cuenca should've doubled Barcelona's lead when Messi saw his shot saved and fall to the feet of Cuenca. The 20 year old had time but dragged his shot wide of the post.

Diego Alves produced a string of saves during the game that kept his team in the tie. Most notably a great reaction save from a well worked free kick between Xavi and Messi. Xavi laid the ball off to Messi who blasted his shot low but Alves moved quickly to deny the Argentine.

After another close call for Valencia, the half time whistle blew and Barcelona were strong favourites to go on and won the game. But Valencia almost rewrote the script after the interval. Jordi Alba broke clear of the Barcelona defence but could not squeeze his shot past an outstretched Pinto.

Cesc celebrates the opening goal
Barça soon regained dominance and this time it was up to the bar to save Valencia. Messi worked room for himself in the box before his shot was deflected into the air. A scrambling Alves could only pray and got his reward as the ball bounced off the bar for a corner.

Next the three time Ballon d'Or winner crept through an impossibly small gap and was through on goal but another fine save from Alves prevented Messi. It was the same situation eight minutes later as Alves again stopped Messi.

Valencia's chances decreased further when Feghouli received his second yellow for a needless tussle with Carles Puyol. The winger threw his arm into Puyol's face and received his marching orders from the referee.

The man advantage paid off for Pep's men as their lead was soon doubled. A set of neat passes produced the goal as Messi played a through ball to Alexis Sánchez, who held the ball up well. The Chiliean fed the ball to Fàbregas who cushioned the ball into Xavi's path. Xavi took his chance and buried the ball into the top corner of the goal.

Guardiola brang on fresh legs to help retain his lead. A returning Andrés Iniesta added experience to the game whilst Dani Alves and Tello brought fresh pace. After one more save from Alves, Barcelona won the game 2-0 and sealed their place in the Copa del Rey final aganist Athletic Bilbao.

Brazillian wonder-kid arriving at Barça?

Neymar's future has been uncertain for a long time now. Clubs from every top European league seem to be queuing up for his signature. But the speculation is drawing to a close and the fight for Neymar's signature has turned into a two horse race between the Spanish giants. This will all have to wait until 2014 as Neymar recently snubbed the transfer talk and extended his contract with current club Santos. That doesn't mean Real and Barça can't fight for the first chance to sign the 19 year old. It was recently reported that Barcelona have agreed a fee with Santos for first dibs at Neymar. But any deal that Barça would try to carve out will be met by competition from Real Madrid as well as a hefty price tag. Neymar is currently on £90,000 a week wages in an attempt to see off the European clubs but Barça will try to combat that by offering a deal worth €7 million euros a year. This would put him in the same wage bracket as World Cup winners David Villa and Xavi. Ne...

Messidependencia returns as Barcelona stutter in Bilbao

Usually the moments of game-changing magic are saved for Lionel Messi but in his absence, one man stood up to take centre stage. 38-year-old Aritz Aduriz had been on the pitch for little over a minute before he was bicycle-kicking his team into a shock win. In La Liga's opener, Barcelona looked tepid. Antoine Griezmann may have hoped it would be he would provide the magic but in the opening stages it was Iñaki Williams, albeit for the other team. For a manager already under fire, it was the worst possible start to the new campaign. Points dropped in the opening games used to be no major cause for concern. Chalk it up to pre-season not being quite right or players not being fully fit and relax in the warm comfort that you have 30+ games to rectify the mistake. Nowadays, with the relentless nature of modern football, a defeat is approaching terminal. Aside from Barcelona, every Champions League semi-finalist from last year won their opening game and their old foe Real Madri...

Madrid's meltdown gives Barça a route to the title

Real Madrid boss, José Mourinho, could be the unlikeliest source of Barcelona's hope in retaining their league title. Spanish newspaper Marca recently obtained access to a Real Madrid training session, more importantly a training session in which Mourinho and Sergio Ramos exchanged insults in a war of words. The newspaper ran the transcript of the argument not only between Mourinho and Ramos but also club captain Casillas. Heavy words were thrown between both parties and it all stemmed from the marking of Carles Puyol. Or the lack of marking in Mourinho's opinion. Ramos explained that he and Pepe made the decision to switch defensive duties because Gerard Piqué was looking the most dangerous so Ramos should mark him instead of Puyol, who Pepe will now pick up. Mourinho reacted angrily at this asking Ramos "So you're the manager as well now then?" This question caused Ramos to also react angrily explaining “Depending on the match situation, sometimes it’s neces...
