Barça get their noses in front

Barcelona returned from a goal down to win 2-1 in last night's Copa del Rey tie against Real Madrid.

The Catalans started well, pressing Madrid high up the pitch but eventually it was the men in white who started to dictate play. Hard tackles, in particular from Ronaldo, broke up Barcelona's play. Although Real Madrid do not have the passing quality of Barça it was an exquisite pass that set up the first goal.

The reigning champions broke the deadlock as Cristiano Ronaldo ignored his Clásico superstition. The number 7 broke free of Dani Alves and was brilliantly found by inform striker Benzema. Giving Ronaldo too much space is rarely positive and the chance wasn't wasted. He broke free of Piqué's pressure and smashed the ball through the legs of reserve goalie Pinto.

Barcelona stuck to their philosophy and tried to create chances with short passes but the tactics of Mourinho's Madrid seemed to keep them at bay. The biggest chance falling to Alexis, who saw his header collide with the bar.

Real Madrid continued to impress and unusually Lionel Messi barely touched the ball. For once Madrid weren't being overrun in midfield and seemed to follow their coach's instructions to the word. Ronaldo was a highlight, making crucial tackles and covering for attacking players straying out of position.

The half time whistle came with Madrid leading 1-0. Both managers would be satisfied with what they had seen so far but Mourinho would've been the happier of the two.

Barcelona started the second half with a quick pace. Catching any loose balls and pressuring the Madrid players. They earned themselves a corner early into the second half and Xavi lined up to take it. The ball came floating in as Pepe was left ball watching and left space for Puyol. The captain took the chance beautifully with a diving header to level the score line.

Real Madrid picked up the pace too and possibly should've taken the lead again when Karim Benzema struck the post. Saving the blushes of a beaten Pinto.

The Catalans began to dominate though. Reaching their standard high levels of possession and putting it to good use in the 76th minute. A well timed run from Abidal was spotted by Messi with a chipped through ball. The French left back controlled the ball and slotted past Casillas. Barcelona led for the first time and looked unlikely to concede.

The game did not produce a red card but maybe should've. Pepe had been playing dirty tactics all night long. Acting as if he was struck in the face when replays showed he wasn't and over dramatising every tackle made. Pepe was booked for an ill timed tackle but could have been shown a straight red card for intentionally stamping on Lionel Messi's hand late in the second half. An incident the referee failed to spot. A late lunge from Ricardo Carvalho was almost deemed unworthy of a card by referee Muñiz Fernández.

The game finished 2-1 and although nothing is certain, Barcelona will be confident they can get the result they need when the sides meet next Wednesday at the Camp Nou

Upcoming Opponents: Málaga FC

Team name: Málaga Club de Fútbol Recent form: L-D-L-D-L One to watch: Santi Cazorla Competition: La Liga Fixture date: 22nd January 2012 Stadium: Estadio La Rosaleda Coming from a 2-1 midweek Clásico win, Barcelona next face a reformed Málaga away. The southern Spain side currently sit eighth in the La Liga table and trail Barcelona by 16 points. But their recent form has been poor and that has seen them lose ground in the fight for the European places. Málaga have not won since late November having been on a run of three draws and five defeats. This is a record that looks likely to increase when the Catalans come to town. Barcelona are also in a race but for them it's the title race. Currently five points behind leaders Real Madrid, Pep Guardiola can not afford to concede any more points to José Mourinho's side. Many will be expecting Barcelona to win this game comfortably. Especially with the adrenaline still pumping from that Clásico win. But Barcelona face M...

Upcoming Opponents: Villarreal

Team name: Villarreal Club de Fútbol Recent form: W-L-D-L-D One to watch: Marco Rubén Competition: La Liga Fixture date: 28th January 2012 Stadium: El Madrigal After securing progression in the Copa del Rey, Barcelona next face Villarreal. El Submarino Amarillo are half way through a very disappointing season and are currently sitting at 17th in the La Liga table. They desperately need points but will be lucky to finish the weekend out of the drop zone. Barcelona also desperately need points in order to reduce the five point deficit between them and Real Madrid. By the time the game kicks off, Madrid will already have played their game against Real Zaragoza and Pep Guardiola will be hoping the point gap remains at five. Guardiola will be without David Villa, Ibrahim Affelay and Andrés Iniesta, who picked up a muscle tear in Wednesday's game. Leaving a first team spot for rising stars, Thiago and Cuenca. Villarreal's main problem this season has been their leak...

Osasuna shock Barça

Guardiola and substitute Iniesta  Osasuna battled the icy conditions to produce a shock 3-2 victory over Barcelona. The Catalans' poor away form continued as they failed to adapt to a frozen pitch and conceded two early goals. A comeback looked likely when Alexis scored in the 50th minute but Barça's hopes faded when Raúl Garcia scored Osasuna's third. Osasuna adapted to the conditions the quickest and found themselves ahead in the fourth minute. Lekic was the recipient of a clever pass that gave him space in the box and he calmly finished past Valdés to make it 1-0. Pedro stared the game but for a player who's game heavily relies on his pace, a frozen pitch is a nightmare. The winger failed to get past any defenders and his shot fired disappointingly wide. Pedro's nightmare was representative of the whole Barcelona game, the world class passing was unable to function in such cold conditions. Lekic doubled his goal tally in the 21st minute. A Barcelona-esqu...
