Upcoming Opponents: RCD Espanyol

Team Name: Reial Club Deportiu Espanyol de Barcelona

Recent form: L-W-W-D-W

One to watch: Sergio García

Competition: La Liga

Fixture date: 8th January 2012

Stadium: Estadi Cornellà-El Prat

Barcelona kick off their 2012 La Liga campaign with an away tie at Catalan neighbours Espanyol. Barça go into the game after their impressive 4-0 victory against Osasuna at the Camp Nou. A tie which saw Guardiola refrain from fielding a full strength side.

Espanyol will not have as much confidence after losing their fifth round Copa del Rey away leg at Cordoba. Only losing 2-1 though does give them hope of turning it around in the second leg, a luxury Osasuna do not have.

In the league Espanyol have played 16 games, winning seven in the process which has earned them an 8th placed spot in the La Liga table.  But only eight points adrift of the drop zone, Espanyol won't be looking to add to their seven defeats so far this campaign.

Barcelona will be hoping to take home three points and to stay withing touching distance of the leaders, Real Madrid.  But with a record of three wins, three draws and one defeat on the road this season, Guardiola's men can not afford to become complacent.

Espanyol will be leading with striker Sergio García, hoping he can add to his
five goals in fourteen games. A challenge that sees him put against World Cup winner's Puyol and Piqu
é. A defensive duo good enough to throw any striker off his game.

The Barcelona outfit should be a full strength side minus injured David Villa and a doubtful Andrés Iniesta.  My prediction is Guardiola will start with an attacking three of Cuenca, Fàbregas and Messi. This will give the team plenty of options when it comes to attacking the Espanyol defence. Having already conceded twenty goals this season to Barça's socring record of fifty , you would be forgiven for thinking Barcelona are guaranteed to score.

The result though is not a forgone conclusion. Barcelona's away form has been shaky this season and that may be dwelling on some of the less experienced players' minds. Something manager,  Mauricio Pochettino, is hoping to capitalise on.

Upcoming Opponents: Málaga FC

Team name: Málaga Club de Fútbol Recent form: L-D-L-D-L One to watch: Santi Cazorla Competition: La Liga Fixture date: 22nd January 2012 Stadium: Estadio La Rosaleda Coming from a 2-1 midweek Clásico win, Barcelona next face a reformed Málaga away. The southern Spain side currently sit eighth in the La Liga table and trail Barcelona by 16 points. But their recent form has been poor and that has seen them lose ground in the fight for the European places. Málaga have not won since late November having been on a run of three draws and five defeats. This is a record that looks likely to increase when the Catalans come to town. Barcelona are also in a race but for them it's the title race. Currently five points behind leaders Real Madrid, Pep Guardiola can not afford to concede any more points to José Mourinho's side. Many will be expecting Barcelona to win this game comfortably. Especially with the adrenaline still pumping from that Clásico win. But Barcelona face M...

Upcoming Opponents: Villarreal

Team name: Villarreal Club de Fútbol Recent form: W-L-D-L-D One to watch: Marco Rubén Competition: La Liga Fixture date: 28th January 2012 Stadium: El Madrigal After securing progression in the Copa del Rey, Barcelona next face Villarreal. El Submarino Amarillo are half way through a very disappointing season and are currently sitting at 17th in the La Liga table. They desperately need points but will be lucky to finish the weekend out of the drop zone. Barcelona also desperately need points in order to reduce the five point deficit between them and Real Madrid. By the time the game kicks off, Madrid will already have played their game against Real Zaragoza and Pep Guardiola will be hoping the point gap remains at five. Guardiola will be without David Villa, Ibrahim Affelay and Andrés Iniesta, who picked up a muscle tear in Wednesday's game. Leaving a first team spot for rising stars, Thiago and Cuenca. Villarreal's main problem this season has been their leak...

Game over for Barça?

The title seems to be slipping from Barcelona's grasp after a disappointing 0-0 at Valencia extended Real Madrid's lead to seven points. The Catalan outfit failed to score even after dominating the game leaving the relegation-threatened side with a vital point. Barcelona's closest effort of the game came in the 17th minute. Messi produced another well timed run and found himself one-on-one with the Villarreal keeper, Diego López. The Argentine chipped the ball but luck was not on Barça's side as the ball bounced wide. Victor Valdés was again on top form, punching a free kick away from the danger zone. The ball dropped near the goal line but Javier Mascherano headed the ball away before Eric Abidal blocked a shot that looked goal bound. Without the striking talents of David Villa and Alexis Sánchez on the pitch, Barcelona lacked their clinical edge. No strong chances flell their way leaving them frustrated and causing them to pick up more bookings then usual. Both ...
